Sen. Sessions’ longtime state director Chuck Spurlock dies

WASHINGTON — Chuck Spurlock, who was the Montgomery-based state director on Sen. Jeff Sessions’ staff since he was first elected in 1996, passed away today.

Spurlock was well known among those in Alabama politics, and often represented the senator at events all over the state.

Here is Sessions’ full statement.

“I am heartbroken over the passing of my friend and State Director, Chuck Spurlock. Chuck loved life, had high ethical and moral standards, and always reflected the best qualities of public service. He was a loyal patriot and a truly loyal friend and confidant. We spent countless hours driving the state, often into the night, talking together. He was the first person named to my Senate staff.

Chuck was one of the most knowledgeable people, perhaps the most knowledgeable person concerning politics and government in Alabama over the past 25 years. Members of our delegation in Congress, friends, office holders, and candidates throughout Alabama regularly sought his opinion and insight. His judgment was highly favored.

He loved the practical aspects of politics while being an historian and intellectual. The state staff he supervised loved him and he loved them and was constantly supportive of their work.

Chuck loved his family dearly and they him. The constant support, encouragement, and affection Phyllis and the children showed him during this difficult time was inspiring to us all. I join Chuck’s friends across every corner of Alabama mourning the passing of a great man.”

Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Montgomery, 2416 W Cloverdale Park. Services will follow at 11 a.m. in the main sanctuary. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke, Box 3624 DUMC, Durham, NC 27710, Attn: Ellen Stainback or to First United Methodist Church, 2416 West Cloverdale Park, Montgomery, AL 36106.

  1. I have had the honor of knowing Chuck Spurlock since the 1980′s. His knowledge, skill and passion made him a great leader and pragmatic politician. I will miss him greatly. We have lost a fine one.

  2. I have always considered Chuck Spurlock as one of my oldest and dearest friends. We began our teaching and debate coaching careers the same year, 1976. We found that we were kindred spirits, sharing many common interests and passions. I will miss his humor, intellect and spirit. I am thankful for his being able to find a meaningful career and a loving family. He will be greatly missed by many.
