WASHINGTON — Rep. Jo Bonner, R-Mobile, is leaving his U.S. House seat to be vice chancellor for government relations and economic development at the University of Alabama System.
Bonner is expected to announce the move at 4 p.m. in Mobile. The move is effective in August.
The U.S. Constitution requires the governor to call a special election to replace Bonner, who represents the 1st District of Mobile and southwestern Alabama.
Bonner was not in Washington for a 12:30 eastern vote on the floor, and his colleagues found out soon afterward in a hand-delivered letter.
Bonner will work at the UA System office in a new vice chancellor position. Bonner’s sister, Judy Bonner, is president of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, one of the three campuses in the system.
