Magic City Classic officials are working hard to make the 72nd annual Magic City Classic more than just a football game.
Officials announced last week that Morris Day and the Time will perform in the post-event concert inside Legion Field immediately following Saturday’s game between Alabama State and Alabama A&M.
Morris Day and the Time are some of the most successful artists to have worked with Prince. As an American funk and dance-pop ensemble, Prince formed the pop-funk group in the early 80s. They are widely known for playing a big part in Prince’s “Purple Rain” film that swept the nation in 1984.
“We are thrilled to have another great legend entertaining fans after the game this year,” stated Faye Oates, executive director of the State Farm Magic City Classic. “Morris Day and the Time will provide an exciting performance for the fans, and what a great deal it is for the fans to receive complimentary admission with their game ticket.”
In addition, rapper V.I.C. will be traveling to Birmingham to perform his hit song “Wobble” while fans dance along and try to set a world record for largest “Wobble.” The action will take place at 2 p.m. inside Legion Field, 30 minutes before the kickoff of the Alabama State-Alabama A&M game on Saturday.
V.I.C. will be introduced by comedian and radio host Rickey Smiley for the big song and dance. Prominent local officials, cheerleaders and even the world famous Ronald McDonald and Hamburglar will “Wobble” with fans inside the stadium as they attempt to set the record for holding the world’s largest “Wobble.” V.I.C.’s hit song the “Wobble” became famous in 2011 and 2012 when it swept the U.S. as the latest dance craze at clubs, events and even wedding receptions.
“This is yet another fun angle we have added to make the 72nd annual event even bigger and better than ever,” Oates said. “It will be fun to watch more than 30,000 ‘wobbling’ fans sing and dance along to V.I.C.’s hit. With Ice Cube as the celebrity ambassador and Morris Day and the Time playing a post-game concert, now having V.I.C. perform the ‘Wobble’ and go after a world record is the icing on the cake for the fans.“
Reserved tickets for the game are $25, while general admission tickets are $20. Both are still available for purchase through TicketMaster at 800-745-3000 or online at www.themagiccityclassic.com. Tickets can also be purchased at Legion Field or AAMU and ASU ticket offices. As the official discount ticket outlet, fans will only be able to purchase the $15 general admission discounted ticket from select Regions Bank locations.
The State Farm Magic City Classic brings fans and celebrities from around the country to watch as Alabama A&M University and Alabama State University battle it out for bragging rights. Fans can also enjoy the McDonald’s Magic City Classic Parade and the Coors Light Tailgate Party throughout the weekend. Kick-off is at 2:30pm on Saturday, October 26th, and the much-anticipated halftime will feature the Marching Hornets and the Marching Maroon and White.
Also at halftime, both university presidents will honor this year’s celebrity ambassador, hip-hop artist, actor, director and movie producer “Ice Cube.” For more information on the State Farm Magic City Classic, visit www.themagiccityclassic.com.
“This is sure to be one of the most exciting games of the 72-year history of the State Farm Magic City Classic,” Oates said. “The response from fans has been overwhelming and we are excited to see how many come out to participate in this record-breaking event.”
