Alabama State’s soccer team, already in the midst of a record-setting season, won their six consecutive match on Sunday afternoon, beating Jackson State 2-1 to clinch the Southwestern Athletic Conference’s East Division title.
“This was a big win for our program,” ASU soccer coach Jodie Smith said. “It’s our first Eastern Division championship and we won it at home. This program has come a long way and its nice to have the school give us the support that they do.”
Aaliyah Lewis assisted on the first goal and scored the second one to give the Hornets a 2-0 lead. Alabama State (9-6) improved to 3-0 in SWAC play (only division matches count in the standings) with the win. Goalkeeper Kylee Hathaway had four saves on the day to preserve the victory.
Sunday’s match was the final home match for the Hornets, who now hit the road to face Grambling on Friday and Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Sunday.
