ASU freshman earns player of the year honors

The Southwestern Athletic Conference announced the 2012 SWAC All-Conference soccer team on Wednesday, as chosen by league coaches and sports information directors.

Alabama State had the most players to make the all-conference teams with five, including forward Alexandria Cannon and midfielder Anastasia McCleary on the first team. Prairie View had four with one on the first team, while Mississippi Valley and Jackson State had three each.

McCleary was named the SWAC Freshman of the Year. The Queenland, Australia native had three goals and five assists. Her assists total was tops in the SWAC. During a non-conference match against Judson College, McCleary had a pair of goals and three assists.

Grambling State forward Sierra Ardnt was named SWAC Player of the Year, while Texas Southern defender Florence Onyera was voted Defensive Player of the Year.

Alabama State players earning second-team all-conference honors include midfielder Lenna Lamas, defender Iita Pienimaki and goalkeeper Kylee Hathaway.

Alabama State will be in action this weekend at the SWAC Soccer Championships at the Johnny Downs Complex in Alexandria, La.
