The Alabama State University men’s basketball coaching staff is teaming up with the Black Coaches and Administrators (BCA) for the “On the Line” promotion during February’s Black History Month to connect men and their families to the resources they need to become educated about prostate cancer.

Alabama State’s coaches will be wearing blue bow ties during the Hornets’ game with Alcorn State today.

“This is something I thought was worthy enough to be recognized here in Montgomery and in the state,” head coach Lewis Jackson said. “The cause is what prostate cancer does to the body and to our health, so we are going to wear blue bow ties because we certainly want to bring awareness to prostate cancer to the black men here in the state and in Montgomery.”

Several college coaches have been affected by prostate cancer, including Tubby Smith, Digger Phelps, Steve Lavin and Jim Boeheim. Research has shown one in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime, with African-American men at even a great risk at one in five.

“On the Line” proclaimed the week of Feb. 18-26 as “Statement Week.” During the week, nearly 100 African-American NCAA Division I men’s basketball coaches will show their support and raise awareness of prostate cancer by not only wearing a blue bow tie, but an “On the Line” button as well.
