Del Taco is on the way to Montgomery and Prattville.

A developer is renovating the former Boardwalk Burgers and Fries building in EastChase and plans to open in October. It will be the second Alabama location for Del Taco, a West Coast staple that features a mix of Mexican and American food.

Larry Blumberg & Associates, which holds the franchisee rights for much of the state, is in negotiations for the former Peoples Bank & Trust site at 1805 E. Main St. in Prattville, where it plans to build another location.

Company senior vice president Bill Davis said they’re currently hiring 75 to 80 people in Montgomery and expect to hire about the same number in Prattville once that deal is finalized. “The demographics for Montgomery and Prattville are very similar,” Davis said.

The fast food restaurant serves 10 different kinds of tacos and 12 different kinds of burritos, along with burgers, fries and milkshakes. It started in California in the 1960s, and most of the locations are in the West.

LBA built the first Alabama Del Taco earlier this year in Dothan, where Davis’ company is based. He said the company is planning at least 20 openings over the next nine years.

“Montgomery was just sort of a natural progression for us,” Davis said.

They originally considered putting the restaurant near the intersection of Taylor and Vaughn roads but changed course when the building at 6941 EastChase Loop became available – despite the fact that Whataburger and Boardwalk both failed to succeed at the spot.

“In doing some research, we found the reason those two (restaurants) were not successful had nothing to do with the sales,” Davis said. “The sales were very good. We’ve looked at the numbers for the surrounding fast food restaurants and all of those are very strong sales.”

He said the company looked at many sites in Prattville but settled on the Cobbs Ford Road spot because of its position next to a high-traffic intersection.

The Prattville building will closely follow the company’s prototype, with a curved “tower” roof, but Davis said the Montgomery building will look slightly different because it’s a renovation of an existing structure.

The company is hiring all positions for its Montgomery location, including managers and team leaders. You can download an application or submit your resume online at or email your resume to
