Post-practice notes

Hey everyone.

Some interesting things were said after practice. None of them came from coach Gene Chizik’s mouth; he’s apparently sick and headed home after practice. It happens.

A.J. Greene said he’s happy to have Aubrey Phillips back on the field. “When he left, he was really, really down. I could understand why he did what he did, but I knew he still loved the game. I always knew it was a possibility that he could come back. Sure enough, he’s back here with us.”

• Gus Malzahn said Barrett Trotter and Clint Moseley will split reps evenly throughout spring drills.

• Moseley said he wasn’t in a good place for a significant portion of his college career, but a speech he heard in Montgomery before the Clemson game changed his entire world view. He’s happier than he’s ever been these days.

• Malzahn said Ladarious Phillips is 295 pounds — a few pounds heavier than when he arrived — and may compete for the vacant spot at utility back. That’s the one Eric Smith used to play until he was arrested again last month.

• Ted Roof declined to discuss LB Jessel Curry’s status.

• Roof said he thinks Neiko Thorpe will be a better fit at safety because the rising senior is “rangy.”

• Chris Davis appears to be the top option at Thorpe’s old spot at cornerback.

• Greene said the injury he suffered in the Clemson game (broken tibia, dislocated ankle) “didn’t hurt at all.”
