NOTES: It’s finally game week (8/29/10)

Hey everyone. Let’s boogie.

  • Best quote of the day was from WR Kodi Burns when asked about QB Cam Newton’s moped: “I wanted one back in the day … when I was in fifth grade.”
  • So how does Burns travel? “I just walk. No umbrella when it rains. Man stuff.”
  • DE Hot Carter describing Newton: “He’s a great challenge. You never know what to expect from him. He’s like a big mystery box.”
  • A mystery box? Please explain: “You never know what he’ll say. Some days he walks into the locker room and won’t say nothing, next day it’s something funny, next day it might be a joke about you.”
  • Good quote from Newton about not feeling like a made man: “I don’t think you can say: `OK, I finally got everybody’s trust.’ I still haven’t played a snap. There are a lot of people, even on this team, that are waiting to see if Cam is going to do what everybody is hoping he’s going to do.”
  • Gene Chizik said CB T’Sharvan Bell should be “penciled in” as a starter. He’s the top reserve at both cornerback spots, but he’s the No. 1 nickel and is part of the dime package as well.
  • Defensive coordinator Ted Roof said he’s been impressed with Bell because he’s so much more reliable this year. Roof said he knows what to expect from the junior, which is high praise. He said guys whose output waxes and wanes “will get you killed.”
  • DT Mike Blanc said he and Nick Fairley and Zach Clayton freely rotate between the traditional tackle spot and noseguard. The youngsters don’t do that — Jeff Whitaker primarily is at nose and Kenneth Carter primarily is at tackle.
  • Chizik said there still is no “winner” in the sweepstakes at punter. Senior Ryan Shoemaker and freshman Steven Clark remain in tight contention there. A decision? Chizik said he’s prefer to have something decided on Tuesday.
